How choosing the right provider can unleash the power of e-Learning and break the stigma

We have all done those mandatory eLearning courses as part of some regulatory compliance. Click through the pages as quickly as you can, get your 80% pass mark on the test and forget about it for another year.

In today’s fast-paced world, the concept of online learning has evolved far beyond mere content delivery and boring compliance training.

People’s perceptions of online training can vary widely based on their experiences, backgrounds, and the context in which they encountered it – so it can be viewed as a negative both in the workplace and by employers.

Many workplaces, big and small may know and realise the importance of training, but sometimes it can be seen as just a ‘tick box’ exercise without any depth to why people are being trained and how it can make the workplace work better.

There can also be a lot of stigma attached to eLearning. Some of these perspectives include:

Lack of engagement – ‘eLearning is just a passive experience and is not as good as face-to-face training’ Many people like the exchange between themselves and their trainers; feeling supported throughout the learning experience, with regular reassurance and feedback that eLearning cannot match.

Quality and Credibility – Some people are worried about the quality and credibility of online training content, and if it offers the same in-depth nature of face-to-face training.

Technical Challenges – Going online can be intimidating for some and some courses can be confusing and difficult to navigate.

Motivation – Keeping learners engaged during any form of training can be a struggle, especially with e-learning. Many people will switch off quickly if a training course doesn’t hold their attention.

No Interaction – Watching endless videos, scrolling through slide after slide on a powerpoint Some people perceive online training as dull and having a lack of interaction with the learner.

So, how do you break these myths and create online learning as effective as face-to-face training?

Firstly, it is important to put the learner at the centre, understand their needs and what they hope to get out of the training.

Then, create content that is visual, informative and of course engaging. Create the right level of interaction so that learners stay engaged with the content and have take action to proceed to the next stage.

Invest in technology that ensures the learner journey is seamless and simple, even for those with low confidence in using IT.

Create an environment where people can interact with other learners, share ideas and ask questions.

Check understanding regularly thought the eLearning experience and provide a mechanism for people to apply their new skills to real situations.

Enable people to learn at their own pace and at a time that suits them.
